Etymology: Technical word of unknown origin. The resemblance to μέλαθρον (s. v.) can hardly be accidental (quite uncertain idea of Pisani KZ 71,126). After Grammont Dissimilation 43 for *κμέρεθρον to Skt. (gramm.) kmárati `be crooked'; "not more than a possibility" (Mayrhofer KEWA s. v., rejected EWAia III 129). Cf. on καμάρα. - Prob. Pre-Greek.
